Disney to Close 60 Stores  by End of 2021

Of the current 300 stores Disney operates across North America, 60 locations or 20% of their footprint, will close by the end of the year. In their announcement, they said this was part of an effort to focus more on e-commerce.

Stephanie Young, president of consumer products, games, and publishing, said "the global pandemic has changed what consumers expect from a retailer. We now plan to create a more flexible, interconnected e-commerce experience that gives consumers easy access to unique, high-quality products across all our franchises."

Of the 60 closures, 38 of them are expected to take place by March 23rd. The list of immediate closures includes:

  5. Montclair, CA
  6. Roseville, CA
  7. San Diego, CA (Fashion Valley Mall)
  8. Mission Viejo, CA
  9. Montebello, CA
  10. Salinas, CA
  11.  San Jose, CA
  12. Santa Monica, CA
  13. Broomfield, CO
  14. Miami, FL (Aventura)
  15. Tampa, FL
  16. Chicago, IL (State St)
  17. Rosemont, IL
  18. Indianapolis, IN
  19. Merriville, IN
  20. Overland Park, KS
  21. Baltimore, MD
  22. Hanover, MD
  23. St. Louis, MO
  24. Freehold, NJ
  25. Riverhead, NY
  26. Staten Island, NY
  27. North Olmsted, OH

In addition to their ShopDisney e-commerce platform, the brand has said they will focus more attention on their shopping app and offer more direct-to-consumer options. "We now plan to create a more flexible, interconnected e-commerce experience that gives consumers easy access to unique, high-quality products across all our franchises," Young said.

While the closures are currently slated for North America, the brand has said that closures could occur in Europe as well. Their retail operations in China and Japan will not be effected.
